How to Move Without Telling Anyone

So it has finally come to this. You have been driven out of your home by the rough types inhabiting the neighbourhood. Or you have somehow made such an ass of yourself that you don't want to show your face again. Anyway, you have to get away fast, and in secret, without telling anybody.

Decide where you are going to go. Be it a mansion or a bedsit , you need a destination to work towards.

Decide how badly you need to get away. If you have to leave right now, pack a bag with clothes and small valuables and skip to step 5. If you can bear to stay longer, go to the next step.

Decide what you are going to leave behind based on what you can lift, how much you are able to transport in your car, van or bicycle and what you can afford to leave behind.

Pack your things in cardboard boxes or containers so that you can lift them yourself and they will fit in your car or van. See Pack Your Possessions When Moving for more information.

Cancel the milk and newspaper and arrange for your mail to be sent to your new place.

Pick a time of day when there is little activity, such as the dead of night or during the day when everyone is at work.

Load your vehicle with what you are taking, drive it to your destination and unload. Repeat as necessary.

Contact an estate agent/Realtor and arrange for your property to be sold or rented.

Tips

  • If your new home is far away, take your stuff to a staging point such as a lock-up and arrange movers to transport it from there. A movers' truck is a fairly sure sign that somebody is moving.

Warnings

  • If moving long distance, you will have to resign from your job. "Sure, he/she did a good job, but only until they disappeared off the face of the earth!" is not a very good reference to have.
  • If moving from rented accommodation it is advisable to inform your landlord. If you don't, you may well be breaking a tenancy agreement.
  • If you are moving because of intimidation or threats, going to the police is the safest option. If somebody has a big enough grudge, they will very likely track you down.
